Beginner FAQ

What is the easiest FPV drone for a total beginner in Australia?

A ready-to-fly kit such as the DJI Neo 2 Motion Fly More Combo or DJI Avata 2 Fly More Combo (assisted flying), or an analogue whoop kit like the BetaFPV Cetus X FPV Kit. Spend a few hours in a simulator first.

Do I need a licence or registration to fly FPV for fun in Australia?

No. CASA says recreational flyers do not need to register their drone, hold a licence (RePL) or operator accreditation. Registration plus accreditation or a RePL apply when you fly for business or work.

Can I fly FPV goggles outdoors legally?

Indoors, yes, if the drone can't leave the building. Outdoors, CASA requires you to be a member of a model aircraft association approved for FPV (MAAA, flying at an approved location) or to get CASA approval.

DJI O4, Walksnail, HDZero or analogue?

DJI O4 gives the best image and easiest setup. Walksnail is a strong HD alternative. HDZero has very low, fixed latency and suits racing. Analogue is cheapest, lightest and still used in racing, but the picture is low resolution.

Which simulator should I start with?

Uncrashed and Liftoff suit freestyle and cinematic learners; VelociDrone and the DRL Simulator suit racers; Liftoff: Micro Drones suits tiny whoops. Use an EdgeTX radio such as the RadioMaster Pocket as a USB controller.

What do RTF, BNF and PNP mean?

RTF (ready to fly) includes drone, radio and goggles. BNF (bind-and-fly) is a drone with a receiver, you supply radio, goggles, batteries. PNP/WTFPV frames need you to add a receiver and/or video system.
